CHEST PAIN IN FIBROMYALGIA HERE’S WHAT CAUSES SEVERE PAIN IN CHEST AND RIB CAGE

💜🫁 CHEST PAIN AND FIBROMYALGIA: WHY IT CAN FEEL SO FRIGHTENING

Chest pain can be one of the most frightening and confusing symptoms for someone living with fibromyalgia. 💜

The pain may feel deep, sharp, burning, aching, stabbing, tight, crushing, or intensely tender. Sometimes it can feel as though the entire rib cage is bruised or sore. For some people, the discomfort is mild and annoying, while during a flare it can become severe enough to interfere with sleep, movement, breathing, and everyday activities.

One of the hardest parts is that chest pain can feel very serious—even when it is related to the muscles, ribs, chest wall, or altered pain processing associated with fibromyalgia.

💜 HOW CAN FIBROMYALGIA CAUSE CHEST DISCOMFORT?

Fibromyalgia is associated with changes in the way the nervous system processes pain. The brain and nervous system can become more sensitive to signals coming from the body, meaning sensations that might normally feel mild can be experienced as much stronger or more painful.

This increased sensitivity can involve the muscles and soft tissues around the chest and rib cage.

Some people with fibromyalgia also experience chest-wall pain or costochondritis, an inflammation or irritation involving the cartilage where the ribs connect to the breastbone.

This type of pain may become more noticeable when:

• Taking a deep breath
• Coughing or sneezing
• Stretching the upper body
• Turning or twisting the torso
• Lifting the arms
• Pressing on the breastbone or ribs
• Sleeping in certain positions
• Hugging someone
• Wearing tight or restrictive clothing
• Remaining in one position for a long time

For some people, simply touching the affected area can cause significant tenderness.

🫁 WHAT DOES FIBROMYALGIA-RELATED CHEST PAIN FEEL LIKE?

Everyone experiences it differently.

You may notice:

💜 A deep aching sensation
💜 Sharp or stabbing pain
💜 Burning or tingling sensations
💜 Pressure or tightness
💜 Rib-cage tenderness
💜 Pain around the breastbone
💜 Soreness in the chest muscles
💜 Pain that spreads toward the upper back or shoulders
💜 Increased sensitivity when the area is touched
💜 Discomfort that becomes worse during a fibromyalgia flare

Some people describe it as feeling like they have been hit in the chest or as though their ribs are bruised—even when there is no visible injury.

🔥 WHY CAN A FLARE MAKE IT WORSE?

Fibromyalgia symptoms can fluctuate. During a flare, widespread pain and sensitivity may increase, making previously manageable sensations feel much more intense.

Poor sleep, physical overexertion, emotional stress, illness, changes in routine, and other individual triggers may coincide with worsening symptoms.

When the entire body is already sensitive, the chest wall and surrounding muscles may also become much harder to tolerate.

Even normal movements such as reaching, stretching, getting out of bed, or turning over at night can become uncomfortable.

💜 CHEST PAIN IS REAL—BUT IT SHOULD NOT AUTOMATICALLY BE BLAMED ON FIBROMYALGIA

This is extremely important.

Having fibromyalgia does not protect someone from heart, lung, digestive, or other medical conditions.

Chest pain can have many different causes, including heart problems, lung conditions, acid reflux, infections, muscle injuries, anxiety, and other conditions.

Because some serious conditions can initially resemble musculoskeletal or fibromyalgia-related pain, new, unexplained, severe, or unusual chest pain should be medically assessed rather than automatically assumed to be fibromyalgia.

🚨 SEEK URGENT MEDICAL ATTENTION if chest pain:

• Suddenly appears or becomes severe
• Feels like pressure, squeezing, or crushing
• Does not go away or keeps getting worse
• Spreads to the arm, shoulder, neck, jaw, stomach, or back
• Occurs with shortness of breath
• Is accompanied by sweating or nausea
• Causes dizziness, fainting, or unusual weakness
• Happens with a racing or irregular heartbeat
• Feels significantly different from your usual symptoms

If these symptoms are happening, don’t try to diagnose yourself through social media or assume it is simply another fibromyalgia flare.

🩺 WHEN SHOULD YOU TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR?

Even if you have experienced similar chest discomfort before, it is worth discussing recurring symptoms with your healthcare professional.

A doctor can consider your symptoms, medical history, medications, physical examination, and other appropriate tests to determine whether the pain is likely coming from the chest wall, muscles, gastrointestinal system, heart, lungs, or another source.

Getting checked does not mean you are overreacting.

It means you are taking your health seriously.

💜 LIVING WITH INVISIBLE PAIN

One of the most difficult things about fibromyalgia is that the pain may be completely invisible to everyone around you.

You may look fine while experiencing intense discomfort.

You may smile, continue working, take care of your family, and carry on with your day while your chest, ribs, muscles, and entire body are hurting.

And because previous tests may have been normal, you may sometimes question yourself:

“Is this really happening?”

Yes.

Your pain is real.

But recognizing that fibromyalgia can involve widespread pain does not mean every new symptom should automatically be attributed to fibromyalgia.

You can believe your pain and still get it checked.

You can know your usual flare symptoms and still take a new symptom seriously.

You can live with fibromyalgia and protect your heart and overall health.

💜 Never feel guilty for asking a doctor about chest pain.

Your body is giving you information, and you deserve to understand what it is trying to tell you.

Sometimes the safest thing you can do is stop, listen to your body, and get an answer.

You are not being dramatic.
You are not overreacting.
You are taking care of yourself.
