Risk of Death From All Causes Increased for Patients with Fibromyalgia
Living with fibromyalgia is about much more than pain.

A major systematic review and meta-analysis involving 188,751 people found a possible association between fibromyalgia and higher all-cause mortality over time, with a pooled hazard ratio of 1.27. However, researchers also emphasized that the studies were quite different from one another, meaning this does not prove that fibromyalgia itself directly causes an earlier death.
Another 2023 meta-analysis of 152,933 people reached a different conclusion and found no clear evidence of increased all-cause mortality. This difference between studies is important—and shows why more research is still needed.
🩺 What Doctors & Researchers Want Patients to Pay Attention To
Fibromyalgia can affect sleep, fatigue, physical activity, mental wellbeing and daily functioning. These areas deserve proper medical attention rather than being dismissed as “just pain.”
1️⃣ Don’t ignore severe fatigue or poor sleep
Unrefreshing sleep can worsen pain and fatigue. Clinicians recommend assessing possible sleep disorders such as sleep apnea or restless legs when symptoms suggest them.
2️⃣ Stay physically active—but start slowly
Regular, manageable physical activity can improve pain, sleep and fatigue. Low-impact options such as walking, swimming, cycling, water exercise, yoga or tai chi may be useful. The key is gradual progression rather than pushing through a severe flare.
3️⃣ Don’t overlook mental health
The mortality research found a concerning association between fibromyalgia and suicide. This does NOT mean people with fibromyalgia will experience this outcome—but it highlights why emotional distress, hopelessness and suicidal thoughts should be taken seriously and discussed with a healthcare professional.
4️⃣ Take infections and other health problems seriously
The systematic review found an increased mortality association with infections, while also emphasizing prevention and appropriate treatment. Fibromyalgia can coexist with other medical conditions, so regular healthcare matters.
5️⃣ Reduce preventable health risks
Researchers have suggested that physical inactivity, smoking, poor diet and higher body weight may contribute to some of the excess risk seen in people with chronic widespread pain. These are areas where lifestyle and medical support can potentially make a meaningful difference.
💜 The Most Important Message
Fibromyalgia should never be dismissed as “just pain.”
But this research should not be interpreted as “fibromyalgia means you will die early.”
The evidence is mixed, and researchers are still trying to understand how fibromyalgia, other medical conditions, sleep problems, physical inactivity, mental health and lifestyle factors interact.
The best approach is proactive care:
✅ Regular medical checkups
✅ Treat sleep problems
✅ Stay active within your limits
✅ Eat a balanced diet
✅ Don’t ignore new or worsening symptoms
✅ Seek help for severe emotional distress
✅ Work with your healthcare team on a personalized treatment plan
Your diagnosis is not a prediction of your future. 💜
It is a reason to take your health seriously—and to make sure you receive the care and support you deserve.
